Kapha Season

Kapha Season

Here on Vancouver Island, we have officially entered Kapha season. This means, the rainy and cold days are not yet behind us, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! While we're here, let's make the best of Kapha season.

After all, our environments and daily routines have the greatest impact on our general health and well-being. And now more than ever, we need to take extra care of our physical and mental wellness!

As our external environment greatly impacts our internal environment, the weather can also bring about change within us. Much like our current weather, Kapha dosha has the qualities of being moist, heavy, and cold. And in general, late winter & early spring are governed by Kapha dosha (in North America).

Kapha in excess can cause congestion, colds & flus, lethargy, and brain fog. While a balanced Kapha dosha maintains a healthy immune system, facilitates lubrication of joints & stomach lining, and supports the feeling of being grounded. When looking at ways to maintain balance in your life, consider following some of these seasonal Ayurvedic guidelines.

Spice your meals! What better way to relieve stagnation and heaviness in the body than to mix in a little flavour? It doesn't necessarily have to be a spicy spice. Think Basil, Rosemary, Cilantro, Coriander, Thyme, and Parsley.

All culinary herbs you likely already have in your cupboard, that can easily be sprinkled into most recipes. I am telling you, a little bit of Coriander and Cumin on your eggs goes a long way! (Or on your avocado toast if you're vegan).

De-clutter! Especially during these colder months, when we're feeling the January blues and getting nostalgic of warmer days, we must take the time to purge what no longer serves us.

Being in Kapha season in North America means we just celebrated New Years. Its time to leave the past in the past and relieve yourself of items that take up space, leaving less room for you and your growth!

Keep moving! This lethargy you are experiencing is influencing all of your systems. Don't allow it to overwhelm your alertness and productivity as well. Try to wake earlier and start your day with a workout or yoga practice.

Predominantly Kapha people benefit greatly from sweating. If vigorous exercise isn't your thing, try a sauna.
